So I'm starting to realise how far I have to go in my voyage of beer discovery. There was me thinking that I was pretty well versed in the ales of the England; surely there weren't that many established breweries in the land that I wasn't familiar with.

I was surprised therefore (and a little humbled) when I recently picked up a can from a brewer that I had never heard of.

Vocation Brewery? They must be some new microbrewery on the scene who have got lucky by getting their beer stocked in Tesco.

Wrong! I've since learned that they are very well established, have an intriguing range of beers and are consistently ranked in the UNTAPPD top ten breweries in England.

Life and Death caught my eye as one of the few canned craft beers that Tesco had on their shelves and the black can with contemporary design did it's job in drawing me in.

The beer itself is a 6.5% APA that Vocation describe as "a ballsy, US style IPA, expect flavours of tropical & citrus fruits, with a lingering bitterness set against a smooth malty backbone."

When popping the can the first aroma that hits is floral, but with a fruity sweetness. On pouring it creates an aesthetically pleasing head, although this disappears quickly. It's hazy appearance and amber colour invites you to dive in.

The first sip emphasises the sweetness first picked up by your nose; it's got a lovely tropical feel to it and it took me back to the chewy fruit salad sweets that I used to love as part of my pick 'n' mix.

This initial sweetness then takes a dive down into the sharper end of the taste spectrum, bringing a citrus tang, before passing and leaving a satisfying malty finish.

It packs a lot of flavour in whilst maintaining a lovely balance and speaks volume of the brewer that they've turned out such an amazing interpretation of an American style IPA.

Vocation clearly know what they are doing and I look forward to trying more of their creations very soon.

Cheers
Jamie
