I've been looking forward to trying this ever since picking it up from Bitter Virtue a couple of weeks ago. I had never heard of Ironfire Brewing but as I browsed the stock this striking green can with skeletal cowboy just caught my eye.

Since then I've discovered that Ironfire are a California based brewery who pride themselves on producing beer "for the folks who enjoy beer in all forms, regardless of classification, origin or preconceived notions." There core range of five beers includes "The Devil Within DIPA" and "Six Killer Stout" whilst their seasonal specials includes a Triple IPA called "Judge Jury and Executioner" that I'm very keen to try.

51/50 is an IPA that pours an almost-clear amber colour with a small white head that disappears quickly. Ironfire promises that 51/50 has been brewed with an 'insane amount of hops" and from the nose it's not hard to believe them. It is rich with juicy fruits including mango and apricot.

However when it comes to tasting, whilst the nose lulls you into expecting a juice bomb it's actually a more bitter, almost dank profile once the citrus and fruits fade. That's not to say that it's bad, in fact with it's dense flavour and medium body it actually a very satisfying beer.

It's not the most subtle brew but 51/50 is a bold effort which delivers on it's hoppy promise and goes someway to remind drinkers that not all IPA's have to be the beer equivalent of a fruit salad.
