As I've mentioned in previous blogs, the world of craft beer is ablaze with east coast style IPAs and DIPAs from the USA. Whether it's the hazy wonders from Trillium or the juicebombs like Heady Topper, people are selling their own grandmas to get a taste.

But as was mentioned to me the other day, before selling a kidney to facilitate personal import of these highly sought after beers, there is a whole country of amazing beers right here in the UK.

To paraphrase a well known saying, "is the beer always juicier on the other side of the Atlantic?"

Any self respecting beer lover would be doing themselves a disservice if they haven't yet tried Cloudwater's DIPAs (v9 has just been released) and closer to my home, Southsea Brewing's Heavy Artillery stacks up against some of the best I've ever had.

To reinforce how good some of these UK beers are, I've selected three of the fruitier IPAs and DIPAs that are proving popular at the moment and will review them over consecutive nights.

First up is Northern Monk's Double Heathen, a double IPA that has been getting rave reviews.

In the glass it looks the part, with a golden hazy look that wouldn't look out of place in a Boston taken instagram photo. To say it looks juicy would be an understatement; it looks like a glass of Umbungo!

It has the most fruity nose, with mango and grapefruit being the stand out in this tropical mix, along with a little pine resin to give it a bit of depth.

It tastes amazing; the first hit is the tropical fruit mash that follows through from the nose, but this soon moves through hints of malt before a hugely satisfying bitter finish. It's like having a spoonful of a really good homemade marmalade.

It's shame that this is only a seasonal version as this beer really is spectacular. There is a lot of great brewing going on in the UK and Northern Monk are one of the best at the moment.

If you see this beer, give it a try.... you will not be disappointed.
