It must be this glorious summer spell that has hit the South Coast but yet again I find myself reaching for something pale out of the fridge. Verdant are a small batch brewery based out of Falmouth and in the last six months or so there has been an awful lot of excitement about their beers.

Part of their core range, Pulp is a DIPA that has had glowing reviews and has even had some people (whisper this) compare it to Cloudwater's offerings. After missing it several times from webshops I have finally been able to secure myself a can thanks to Stuart at The Beer Musketeer bottle shop in Southsea.

So how is it? Put simply, it is pretty bloody brilliant.

It has a lovely hazy burnt orange appearance with a white head that offers a fair amount of lacing.

The nose is chock full of stone fruit aromas, especially mango and pineapple.

It has a lovely amount of carbonation, which with it's medium body and especially when fresh out of the fridge, gives it a lovely refreshing mouth-feel.

The flavour is immense; the mango and pineapple dominate, but there's also a welcome hit of resinous pine and a delightfully dry finish.

It's unfair to compare every DIPA to Cloudwater's V series and to be honest Pulp is a different animal. Yes it's got a hugely fruity nose and palate, however in my opinion this is not a pure New England style hazy juice bomb. Instead it offers a balance of flavours that also tips a hat towards the west coast style resinous IPAs and DIPAs. In that respect it is perhaps more similar to Weird Beard's Holy Hoppin' Hell and Southsea Brewing's Heavy Artillery... both of which I love.

One thing I do know is that Pulp is a great DIPA and if this is an example of the brewing that Verdant are capable of then it's only a matter of time before their reputation extends far beyond the British isles.
